Glycol Ethers Origin

“Petroleum is a general term for oil and natural gas. Oil and gas are important fossil fuels formed from the decomposition and pressurisation of algae, plankton and other organisms. This process forms hydrocarbons, which are compounds consisting entirely of hydrogen and carbon that are powerful combustible fuels” (APPEA, n.d.).

Glycol ethers are a group of petroleum derivative chemicals. They can be categorized into two groups according to their origins, which are (1) ethylene glycols and (2) propylene glycols. They offer a robust solvency. Their other beneficial properties are water solubility, high boiling points and lower molecular weights.

E-series glycol ethers are derived from ethylene oxide. E-series glycol ethers such as Butyl Cellosolve (ethylene glycol monobutyl ether) and Butyl Carbitol (diethylene glycol monobutyl ether) are used as solvents to dissolve and coalesce other substances in paints, coatings, adhesives and many other applications.

P-series glycol ethers are propylene oxide derivatives. They are high performance industrial solvents that are also used in various industries such as electronics, paints, coatings, inks, cosmetics and detergents.

Wamin Chemical’s portfolio comprises of both commodity and specialty solvents. You may find all of them in our products page.
